Standard for zoo containment facilities

We are seeking submissions on a proposed standard for keeping animals in zoos.

The proposed Standard applies to facilities that hold one or more zoo animals for public exhibition and other reasons, such as education, conservation or research.

The Standard sets out the rules zoos must follow to ensure zoo animals can’t escape into the wider environment, or pose a risk to visitors.

The current standards are being updated to factor in changes in practice since they were first published in the 1980s.

Once the proposed Standard is approved, the Ministry for Primary Industries will be responsible for enforcement.

We welcome your feedback to make informed decisions on the proposed Standard, as we want the best outcomes for New Zealand.
