Water Conservation Order: Te Waikoropupū Springs

An application for a water conservation order for Te Waikoropupū Springs and associated water bodies was lodged with the Minister for the Environment.
In 2017, the Minister accepted the application and referred it to a special tribunal for consideration. On 17 March 2020, the Special Tribunal’s recommendation report was released.

Submission lodged with the Environment Court
On 8 May 2020, the EPA served notice on persons who made submissions on the original WCO application that ten parties have lodged further proceedings with the Environment Court under s 209 of the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) in respect of the Special Tribunal’s recommendation report.

Period for lodging submissions with the Environment Court extended
Due to the coming into effect of the COVID-19 Alert Level 4, the period for making submissions to the Environment Court has been extended to 1 May 2020. The extension and other helpful guidance from the Environment Court is provided in a Minute dated 25 March 2020.

There were small transposition errors in the signed recommendation report of the Special Tribunal dated 12 March 2020. The Special Tribunal has issued an erratum and the version of the recommendation report that was made available on this website on 17 March 2020 has been corrected accordingly.

Special Tribunal's Recommendation Report released
The Special Tribunal has deliberated on the Water Conservation Order application, and has issued its report and recommendations to the Minister for the Environment for his consideration.
The parties' conservation order seeks protection of Te Waikoropupū Springs on the basis of cultural, scientific, ecological, and recreational values.
