New experts to boost EPA capacity

27 November 2020

We've welcomed nine new decision-makers to our Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Committee, and four new members to our statutory Māori advisory committee.

The HSNO Committee considers applications for new hazardous substances, reassessments of approved hazardous substances, and to introduce new organisms into New Zealand. Sub-committees of members, known as decision-making committees, consider and determine individual applications. Members are appointed by our Board.

These new appointments expand our committee to 17 members, giving us extra capacity and expertise.

The new members are:

  • Karen Coutts, who brings a social science background, and a Māori perspectives lens across Māori development and economic experience.
  • Peter Cressey, a senior scientist at the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR).
  • Dr Julie Everett-Hincks, manager of the science team (environmental resource focussed) at the Otago Regional Council.
  • Dr Nick Fletcher, the principal toxicologist at Food Standards Australia and New Zealand.
  • Dr Andrea Forde has expertise in infectious diseases, vaccine development and public health.
  • Professor Phil Lester, from the School of Biological Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Dr Philip Mladenov, an environmental consultant with chemical and environmental science expertise.
  • Greg Percival, who has deep knowledge in the field of paint and associated chemistry.
  • Dr Stephen Tredwell, who has experience in the chemical and materials processing industries.

Four new members join Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao, our statutory Māori advisory committee. They are:

  • Troy Brockbank, who brings an engineering background and an interest in promoting the integration of mātauranga Māori.
  • Rawiri Faulkner, an experienced senior executive, director and Environmental Commissioner.
  • Dr Matiu Payne, a mahika kai practitioner who lectures for Lincoln University and the Biological Husbandry Unit.
  • Lorraine Toki, a consultant specialising in management, governance, operational policy, and strategic alignment.

Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao provides advice to the Environmental Protection Authority to ensure Māori perspectives are taken into account across EPA policies, processes, and decision making.
