Privately-held units

Individuals and organisations are able to own NZUs. We provide information about private holdings to help people understand the New Zealand carbon market

The Environmental Protection Authority is responsible for running New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme. We provide reports and information about the scheme, to keep the public informed and to meet our legal obligations. This page has information about privately-held units.

People may hold units for different reasons

Individuals and organisations are able to own emission units. These units are issued by the government, then transferred to private holders, who can keep them or trade them. People have a number of reasons for choosing to hold units. This may be to meet future obligations under the Emissions Trading Scheme, for future sale, or other reasons.

Two unit types can be used to meet obligations in New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme – New Zealand Units and New Zealand Assigned Amount Units (NZUs and NZ AAUs).

We provide information about private holdings to help people understand the New Zealand carbon market.

We have listed individuals or organisations under the forestry category if they have ever registered forest land with the Ministry for Primary Industries under the Emissions Trading Scheme, received an allocation of units for pre-1990 forest lands, or received units for forests included in the permanent forest sink initiative.

If an individual or organisation is involved in forestry and has also at some stage registered for any other (non-forestry) activity, we have included them in the category that most closely matches their main involvement in the scheme.
