We have committed to the internationally-recognised Toitū carbonreduce® (previously CEMARS®) programme.
The programme, run by Toitū Envirocare, enables us to measure, manage and reduce our carbon footprint in a way that's formally recognised, and externally verified.
We are one of 96 government organisations that are Toitū carbonreduce certified.
Our commitment to reducing our emissions
We are committed to reducing carbon emissions per Full Time Employee (FTE). To do this we have developed a greenhouse gas emissions management plan and reduction targets. Some of these plans include:
Reducing emissions per FTE from purchased electricity by 8% – through staff awareness campaigns and using the EECA online tool to identify energy savings.
Reducing waste to landfill and paper usage emissions per FTE by 15% – through staff education and awareness campaigns.
Reducing staff business travel emissions per FTE by 8% – through the review of travel policies and technology.
What we've achieved so far
We have successfully completed our fourth year of Toitū carbonreduce certification and are certified through until February 2024.
The total emissions for the year July 2020-June 2021 were 62% lower than last year’s audit and 82% lower than the base year total (2017/18).
(The total emissions this year were 74.53 tCO2e compared to last year’s total of 195.69 tCO2e and the base year total of 423.30 tCO2e. A reduction in emissions intensity of 5.13tCO2e/$M has been achieved - based upon a 5-year rolling average.)
This reduction is calculated on the absolute numbers and includes cost recovered activity, and does not take into account the increase in full-time equivalent employees (FTE).
