Submissions sought on insecticide and fertiliser tablet

The Environmental Protection Authority is calling for submissions on an application by Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd to import or manufacture soil-applied tablets containing imidacloprid and a fertiliser.

The tablets are intended for use in controlling aphids, azalea lace bugs, psyllids, mealybugs and scale and enhancing plant growth in ornamental plants and eucalypt trees.

The applicant states the tablets are a slow-release formulation and provide minimal potential for leaching of active ingredients into the soil. The applicant further states that “as the active ingredients are taken up by the plant’s roots...it can only affect pests that actually attack the plant”.

Submissions close on 30 November 2012.
