The Environmental Protection Authority is reminding a number of new sectors that they need to register as participants of the Emissions Trading Scheme by the end of this month.
Under the Climate Change Response Act, sectors joining the scheme this year must register by 31 January 2012. These sectors include agricultural processors and live exporters, fertiliser importers and manufacturers, importers of synthetic greenhouse gases either in bulk or within refrigeration appliances or goods containing air-conditioning systems, including motor vehicles, and landfill operators.
Environmental Protection Authority ETS General Manager Andrea Gray says the EPA has already identified and written to a number of likely participants. Anyone who is unsure whether they should be registering is being urged to contact the EPA.
In addition to registering, businesses are required to collect data to calculate emissions for the 2012 year and file an emissions return in 2013. The new sectors are not required to cover the cost of their emissions for the 2012 year.
Ms Gray says EPA staff are available to answer questions and provide help and advice to register.
