Who is the New Organisms Division?

Whether you want to import and release a garden plant or animal, or conduct research in a laboratory, the New Organisms Division can help you lodge your application. We will advise you if an application is required, what type of application you should make and guide you through the application process.

If you want to make a submission on a particular application but need more information, we can help you with that process too. We always try to act in a transparent manner so that you are kept well informed of the application and submission processes.

Expertise in the division

The majority of the people in the New Organisms Division have a scientific background. Our managers, senior advisors and advisors have experience in one or more fields relating to the risk assessment and management of new organisms. Post graduate research experience in the group includes molecular biology, immunology and pathology, plant molecular biology, genetics, plant pathology and virology, mammalian physiology, mycology, entomology, ecology, zoology, conservation and biodiversity.

Many of the people in the New Organisms Division worked in academic and industry research or environmental management before starting a career in this organisation. They have worked in biotechnology and forest research, medical research and disease investigation, pesticide environmental risk assessment and risk management, conservation, biosecurity, pest management and quality management systems.

We strive to provide excellent administration, project management, customer service and communication in order to make the application process as efficient as possible.

Managers in the New Organisms Division

Dr Geoff Ridley - Science Manager

A mycologist (people who know about mushrooms and the like), Geoff came to us from Forest Research Institute where he researched forest mycology and pathology. He has also worked as a research scientist in biocontrol and as a lecturer in botany. Geoff can tell you a little bit about everything from basic botany to big birds.

Asela Atapattu - Applications Manager

Before joining the New Organisms team as Applications Manager, Asela worked as a Risk Analyst at the Department of Conservation looking at incorporating native biodiversity protection into biosecurity risk assessments.
