Status of substance request

You can make an informal status of substance (SOS) request to determine whether a substance is hazardous and, if so, whether it is covered by an existing approval.

If the substance is not approved, we can provide guidance on getting it approved, including whether it can be matched to an existing approval.

The advice we provide on the SOS, will determine:

  • Whether or not a substance is hazardous
  • Whether the substance is covered by an existing approval
  • Whether a new approval is required
  • What the hazard classifications of the substance are.

How do I request this service?

Complete an SOS application form to request this service.

How do you apply for an SOS?

Use these application forms to apply for informal advice on the status of a substance. Choose the form that matches the use of your substance.

Substances other than pesticides, veterinary medicines or explosives

This form is used for most substances including cosmetics, cleaners and additives. The use of the substance is covered by a group standard. If the substance is a single chemical, check the approval status of the chemical on the NZIoC. If it is approved, or can be used a single chemical in a group standard, then no further action is required.
