Tangata whenua (people of the land) have an extensive history and experience of New Zealand’s unique environment. We value this knowledge alongside that of contemporary science and actively seek tangata whenua input.
The following groups work together to provide the decision-makers with relevant information about tangata whenua perspectives:
Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao: advises the EPA Board on matters relating to policy, process and decision-making.
Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao, Terms of Reference (pdf, 49 kb)
Kaupapa Kura Taiao: facilitates the incorporation of tangata whenua perspectives in EPA decision-making through assessment, communication and relationship management.
Māori National Network: includes tangata whenua representatives interested in environmental management from around New Zealand.
Kāhui Kaumātua: provides cultural leadership to the Māori National Network.
