Until the EEZ Act comes into force, voluntary interim measures have been established to enable the EPA and industry to trial some of the processes that will be required under the Act. This voluntary regime applies to any new petroleum exploratory drilling activity in the EEZ.
The interim measures ask industry to prepare an impact assessment and provide it to us for review. This is on a voluntary basis. The process is intended to foreshadow what will be required when the EEZ Act comes into force.
The Ministry for the Environment and the EPA have developed guidance on the information to include in an impact assessment to be provided to us for review.
